I barely see them smile or laugh--So I just wondered if it was seen negatively in their culture to be demonstrative.

i am indian--and i wear my heart in my eyes, on my ace. I think Indians by nature are serious, cerebral people. But I am sure you haven't been in touch with all 2 billion Indians--you missed me! The Indian population in this country is 2 % at best.

Yes, it is considered bad manners to express your feelings too openly, as it tends to create a responsibility to respond to them in the other people around you. It's more the British "stiff upper lip" superimposed on what was already a pretty reserved society. Dignity counts for much.

its not just indian people that do not smile... a lot of cultures do not smile due to the fact that .. its just not the norm in our culture to do so... .in the italian culture and other latin based cultures showing affection is done just because it is considered the norm.... indians however aren't all that comfortable doing it.. its just like certain dad's in families who dont mind saying "i love you son" as opposed to other dads who nvr hug or say i love you to their kids.. im sure there are SOMe indians out there who show facial expresions.. are you indian yourself?

Their really serene and don't need to smile to prove their happy. I don't know but my Doctor from India smiles. So did a former classmate of mine.

I don't know who you have been hanging around with, but I have worked with over two dozen various individuals from India, and they ALL have a wide range of emotions and a great sense of humor. Maybe your senses are just too dulled to notice.
