maybe you should check the transmission fluid.

Do you mean like it punches a little when you accelerate? You may need to have to transmission fluid checked. It could be low or needs to be flushed out and changed.

If it's like the car coughing, then it needs some basic serviceing.
Change the plugs, plug leads, fuel filter. Have an injector clean done, change the air filter.

1999, no check engine lite?? Go to major auto supply have them use obd2 scanner, not all problems turn on check engine lite.
Won't solve your problem but tell you what is wrong
NEVER change parts until you determine the problem
