I heard that the NYC subway, back in the late 70s and early 80s, was free on the weekends. Is this true?

To my knowledge the NYC Subway system was never free. However you could and still can ride for nothing on New Years Eve.

No. It's possible that there may have been a promotion one weekend at some point, but basically the answer is no. You've always had to pay.
