It's the carburetor.

1986 !!! sound like time to get a new one! just kidding!! Most time when you car lost its acceleration it either need a major tune up what i mean it's for you to change spark plugs, plugs wires, distributor cap and rotor, oil,oil filter and air filter reset you advance timing the whole nine yard if that doesn't work most likely engine compression are leaking that would mean piston ring are worn oil started to leak inside combusting chamber caused engine to lost its power, this is what i mean time to get the new one.
good luck.

Change the catalytic converter. Your car is at the age when these devices fail. They become plugged and will not let the engine exhaust properly. This builds up in the engine and causes exactly what you are talking about.

I would suggest you check your exhaust by placing your hand behind your exhaust, careful it might be hot, with transmission in park, and have some one accelerate the engine, slowly, and see if exhaust increases. If not a considerable increase in flow you have a catalytic converter partially plugged.

Maybe it's overheating. Check the oil and water levels. You may need a tuneup. It could also be the fuel pump or a clogged Catalytic converter.

If the engine races when you accelerate and it does so very slowly, and you have an automatic transmission, I would say that the tranny has gone bad.

i had a 1988 mazda 929 and it had that same problem, the problem was the fuel injectors they were dirty and it would sputter and wouldn't get going as it used to. I had to get them cleaned which was about 400.00 plus. Once you do get them clean i would use fuel injector fluid your every 2nd fill up, it helps keep them clean and won't cause the problem again

Check you exhaust pipes for damage.

Then have someone rev the engine while you feel the exhaust output. I have a feeling it isn't blowing out very hard.
