I've trimmed it several times and it always comes back thick. Can it be trimmed now? I'm in the outer suburbs of Atlanta and the weather is getting colder.

I've seen folks do it in the late Fall and I've seen fols do it in the spring. If you do it before the end of the moderate weather it will come back a bit. Hard freezes in the winter will usually bite them back. We cut ours way back at the tail end of winter.

The best time to trim the flower buterfly bush is right after the flowers have dropped...
Do not cut it back now or you will be cutting off the new buds..
If you need to go in the middle and get the bulk out you can do that...
good luck

My grandfather always said, "prune when the shears are sharp." Personally, I prune any plant that blooms after that plant's blooming season. I will prune my butterfly bush this winter before the new growth starts. Since mine is a rather young plant, I will allow the limbs to stay a little long. When my plant starts to get big, I will trim it back so that it stays compact.

Wait until spring to cut it back. Then cut it all away to 6" or 12" inches from the ground. It only flowers on new wood. You can cut it now but not to severely. I don't know if your location gets much below freezing temperatures, but you might get some damage from frost. Thats why you should wait until spring to cut it back.
