I am 29 and one year shy of graduating from college with an English degree. I have a clean criminal history except a few speeding tickets. I would like to get into polotics. Not really the major but like alderwoman, or something on a lower level. Where should I start?

Join a commission. A planning or arts and recreation commission is a good start. Make a name for yourself and get some backing from a local politician. Move up to Council member and then make your move up from there.

Either that or become a big movie star like Reagan or Schwarzenegger and do it that way. You can also buy your way into office like a few other Congressmen I know of.

Start at the local level. There are always commissions that need help. Some of these though of value will not do much for helping you meet your goal. I would suggest trying the planning commission. You may have to work for what ever political party you support, this may mean working for some people you don't care for. Most places will require some training in planning and it'll help if you've gone to their meeting and studied the local planning regs. School board is another option even if it is an elected position. Here it not so easy to get people to run for the position.
If you get this far you'll have some idea if it's something your interested in, if so then you can try another position.
Success depends on lots of things, money and the ability to get people to assist you. Maybe you can raise the money, but starting out it helps to have some you can toss away. If your honest you'll never recover it at the local level anyway.

.. start by finding a way to worm your way into a party.. doesn't matter which one.. then observe.. see how lobbyists really make all the decisions.. take the payoffs from the big companies.. smile a lot and make insincere comments.. but most of all.. learn to lie.. lie with a straight face.. but just keep on lying.. and then somehow after awhile it will all seem Natural.. goodness and honesty will have gone out the door and you will be a politician..... Just don't expect any respect, there is none for politicians... but hey, you million dollars salary, private jets and expense paid holidays will make up for that.. besides, you will not even know, after awhile that there really are honest to god good people still in the world.. you will be in the world of politics... Good Luck!

Do you want to run for office or just work in politics?

I would start at your state capitol building for any open employment opportunities or go to your local city hall and apply for any open positions to get a taste of local government.

Get rid of your morals and throw out any conscience there may be. Think only of yourself and practice; "What can your country do for you".
