Gargle with warm salt water a couple of times a day. Take zinc/vitamin C tablets (Jamieson makes them up here in Canada), you can take up to 8 a day of those and they nip it in the bud...and if all else fails there is Cepacol spray or lozenges...they have a numbing agent in them that works beautifully for those terribly painful sore throats that you can't even swallow.

For immediate relief, let a Tylenol dissolve on your tongue and keep it in your mouth for as long a possible. It does the same thing as that Cepacol spray, but lasts MUCH longer. For getting over it faster, take Vitamin C and/or elberberry tea (you can get it at health food stores), along w/Echinacea (either capsules or tea) and St. John'sWort, available at most drugstore chains. (Just don't take too much Tylenol, as that can cause liver problems).

The old-fashioned remedy, that my my mom used to make was a "Hot lemonade", w/fresh lemons, some sugar or honey and hot water. Still, IMO, the best is to chew on lemon or lime slices and drink plenty of acidic juice, like cranberry or orange, along WITH all the above, if you can manage it!
