A way you may want to phrase the question is "Now that I have filled out the application would you be able to tell me what the next process is in candidate selection?" Usually, that makes them come up with some answers and usually it will be when an interview would be scheduled and then at that point I would ask how long does that usually take as far as determining whether or not I will be interviewed. Most importantly if no date is given wait 2-3 days and call and say "This is (your name) and I was just calling to check on the status of my application." Hope this helps and good luck.

You can ask but usually if the hiring manager hasn't already decided to interview you the answer will be "we'll call you." The reason is that tons of candidates asked. If hiring managers had the luxury of responding to those requests they would end up interviewing 40 people for a position and they'd never get anything else done. Rather than try to close the deal early, focus on finding the job that you are truly a perfect fit for and making sure that your resume and everything else about you is presenting you in your best light. Spend extra, extra, extra time searching for the job that YOU can add value to as much as the job that can add value to you. That will greatly improve your chances for an interview.

Here's a good tip, Place a small red or orange post-it note towards the top of your resume with your name on it. Have it stick out just a little bit over the edge of the paper so it will "flag" your application or resume. If it comes off, then your name will be on it and keep you in the mind of the manager. Then on the second day or time you check in with them, if they won't let you speak with the manager, give them another post-it with your name/tel # on it. The manager will remember your name and maybe take another look at your application. That's when I would push for an appointment or best time to stop back. Good luck.

When you hand in the application ask to speak with the manager to set up an interview time. If you have all ready submitted the app., go in person again and ask to speak with the mgr, and offer to make an appt. for a better time.

It depends on the company and the city and the type of person the manager is. Some see it as being confident and assertive and others may be put off by it. Ask around with other employees and ask for their take, after that take the plunge. Whats the worst that can happen?
