I just got a NEC DVD-burner (ND-6500a) for my Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop from eBay. And I already get the firmware (2.03d) from Dell website. When I use Nero to burn the DVD-R (SONY 16X). It only allows me to use 2.4x / 2.0x speed. How to make it 8x?

The disc and the drive are probably not compatible. It's very difficult to find ones that will burn at full speed (CDs anyway)...I got lucky and found DVDs that will burn at my drive's 8x speed.

There seems to be an issue with the drive itself. There are a few reviews of this drive that actually states that this drive only writes DVD at 6x (awaiting another firmware upgrade - http://tech.yahoo.com/pr/nec-nd-6500a/1991585777;_ylt=Au9x.nxcTDXsZGWAIoNo8ELoLZA5?urlbase=pp).

The other thing that you may wish to check is the speed the DVD can be written to. DVD's (the media as well as the drive) come in various speed: 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x.

You may also wish to check this out:

ND-6500A Support 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 2.4X DVD+R9, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 24X CD-R, 15X CDRW

Since it only allows you to use the 2.4/2 speed, I assume that the disc type that you're using is the DVD+R9.

You have to ensure that you match up the correct speeds up if you want to write at the maximum speed available.

optimal writing speed it determined by technique of the disk you're writing to even with the optimal speed given by technique of your author(Burner) maximum Rewritable CD's leads to 4x,recordable as a lot as 52x.Your author(burner) or burning software don't have any issues.
