Warren Gamaliel Harding (29th President) in 1921, was the only other Senator who stepped up directly from Congress, to the Presidency.

13 others were Senators at one point, before winning office or succeeding, in the quest for the White House.

Harry S Truman was the closest, A Senator until 1945, he was Vice-President for 3 months, before succeeding Franklin Roosevelt, who died in office.

Nixon was a Senator, but he became a Vice President first before becoming President (not immediately after the vice presidency too).

Not counting JFK, Warren Harding was the last sitting Senator to become President.

LBJ was also a Senator before becoming VP and Prez.

No one. The people usually vote for someone with executive skills and they alway realize in the end that congressmen can't even tie their shoes without a committee hearing and an exhaustive compromise session.
