I want to buy a laptop for myself but have no idea where to start. I'd like to stay below £1000 and possibly £700 It would be used for mainly surfing the net and emailing and school work. Any recommendations / help / info / ideas would be greatly appreciated!

First of all £700 is a good budget to get a great laptop particularly it would be more than enough for the task you want to use it for.
I am using a fairly old laptop to do net surfing, playing DVD, etc. For the task you want to use the laptop for, you can get a decent one for £500. I would recommend Dell, HP and Acer as they do great deals particularly online. I saw a 'Dell Inspiron 6400' and its about £500 with great specs. One thing you need to make sure is that you get a centrino duo processor, at least 512Mb Ram @ 533Mhz, 80Gig hard drive, DVD Rw. Also of you get a chance, pick up a magazine from the news agent to read a bit about what you should expect get for your money, 'pc advisor' or for your case 'What laptop'. Avoid going to computer retail outlets as some commission driven salesmen will try to rip you off and sell you some rubbish ones. I bought my laptop from Dell (online) in 2002 and it is still working well. Once again your budget of £700 would get you a very decent laptop, but try to allocate a bit of time to do your research and see what the market has to offer. Good luck!

Go to a place like staples business depot or future shop. Almost any laptop will be good enough for that purpose. Just buy one cheep enough but you might want to check with someone working there and make sure you get a laptop that has a good Internet connection.

80GB hard drive space
512MB of ram

that's about all you will need for this type of PC. 95% of the laptops on sale will be good for you.

enable me preface by technique of putting ahead that i'm a approved Dell and HP Reseller. I have not something adverse to Macs in any respect. surely, i'm truly inspired by technique of the present Macbooks. in case you want the Microsoft operating equipment, the Dell Vostro pc has been my cutting-edge %. for suitable fee for lowend laptops. in my opinion, you're comparing apples to oranges. they don't evaluate to at least one yet another as they both have different reward. My specialist opinion: Macbooks - good (outfitted on Unix platform), good classes, straight forward, more effective inflexible criteria, more effective perfect video modifying capacity, capacity to run XP almost (utilising software). Dell Vostro - Comes with XP or Vista, versatile with software, a lot of hardware thoughts, a lot less expensive. i guidance you communicate over such as your instructors first and ask what they'll be utilising. finally, you'll stumble on a lot less issues in case you whichever platform they are utilising.
