some butterfly's hibernate indoors (as butterfly's) and over winter
The tortoiseshell is one of those ,they come out, to lay their eggs ,when the weather is right & thier plant food ( nettles )
is flourishing ,after this they die .

Some butterflies , like the Swallowtail butterflys,
have several broods per year (depending on the weather
they eat hedge parsley plants)
and the late catterpillers ,
pupate and overwinter in the long reeds of river banks .

Some moths === like the Elephant Hawk moth, bury themselves deep in the ground as catterpilars
, where they pupate and over winter ,
to hatch out in the spring as big moths, to mate and lay their eggs on Fusia plants are what the young cattapilars ,
seem to eat most in my garden,.

Some butterflys migrate thousands of miles
.
There is so much to find out

Lepidoptra are fascinating subject to study .

The life expectancy of a butterfly is anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months.

i heard they live for 24 hours too ! you could have a cacoon nest in your apartment somewhere so instead of it being the same butterfly ir could be its relatives i suggest you try and work out where the butterflys are coming from or your apartment could turn into butterfly land lol x :o)

I'm not sure how old you are but for those people who say you should talk to his doctor - they are wrong - it's not a doctor's place to talk to you - UNLESS he has permission from your dad to tell you. Maybe your dad doesn't want to know - the fact you may know a time limit might make you all on edge and less able to enjoy the time you do have with each other - think carefully whether you really want to know or not.
