I have company coming at five o clock, and my living room and kitchen are a complete mess. How can I get it clean pretty fast and efficient. I have two kids so there is always a mess.

Get off the computer and start, that is the hardest. Start with the dishes then the counter if it isn't food or dishes put it in a bag & stuff the bag somewhere, then the floor. If you deal with the clutter then make the appliances and counter shine (window cleaner works well) nothing else gets noticed. In the living room get a bag, trash bag if necessary & pick up the floor, (kids get the toys or they go in the trash) put the bag in a closet, under the bed or even the dryer. Now if you have some baking soda sprinkle it lightly on the carpet. Then get another bag & pick up the flat surfaces hide that bag now get a micro fiber towel and do all surfaces if you don't have one get the paper towels and a dust/polish spray and a glass spray and do all areas so they sparkle (if you've got a lot of stuff try a duster first if you have one) then do a good job with the vacuum making sure you get the baking soda up. If you can light a couple of nice smelling candles (keep away from the kids) while doing this and your place will smell real nice also. Now while you have the window cleaner out touch up the bathroom. At 5 it will probably be getting dark, don't turn on ceiling lights turn on lamps, counter lights & and if you can light some candles. Wash your face, spray on some light cologne and act like you've been relaxing all day :)
But most of all enjoy your guests. If they came to see your house rather than you they aren't worth your time anyway.

You really need some help with this. Your results will depend on what you put into the effort. Think about it develop your plan and stick to it. Remember it took a while for your place to get that way and there's no quick fix. It sounds to me that a skilled house keeper would need the better part of a days work to clean up your mess. However you approach it will take longer. You'll feel much better about this once you get into it and see some results. A good start would be to get your dishes soaking, bag up your loose trash ,cans and any laundry laying around as well as getting rid of old food and nearly empty containers in the fridge As far as music etc. you can use your computer to listen live to most radio stations these days-just google or yahoo search the stations call letters and follow the web sites prompts. I hope this helps and good luck.

If they're old enough, get the kids to help by stacking the dishes and dusting. If they're old enough, they can even wash the dishes.
Get a garbage bag and throw everything in there that is trash or otherwise unwanted. Put that out. Then get a slightly-dampened cloth and dust things. After that, vacuum the living room.
In the kitchen, if the kids haven't already, stack and wash the dishes. Then dry and put them away. Use your dishcloth to wipe down the counters, stove, and table. You may need to rinse and wring it several times. Then sweep and mop the floor.
This is something I have trouble with unless I really focus: Don't procrastinate. The chores won't do themselves.
Good luck!

Just do a quick clean up. No need to scrub. Spot clean and save the heavy duty cleaning for a weekend. Just pick up what doesn't belong, fluff the cushions on the couch and run the vacuum. If you have mini blinds, you can crack them a bit to let in some light. In my opinion it just helps brighten the room a bit and natural light just makes you feel better. Light some candles too. Your kitchen, do a quick sweep and spot mop if you need to. If you have dirty dishes, throw them in the dishwasher. If you don't, do a quick wash by hand. Wipe the counters down and of course, put a candle in there! Get your kids to pitch in if they have toys everywhere. Make it fun for them and make it a race, the winner gets a prize later that evening.

Get a box or basket, go through both rooms and pick up EVERYTHING that doesn't belong and hide the box. Then sweep/vacuum the floors and wipe all of the surfaces with a rag. Dishes can be tossed in the dishwasher & arranged later or hidden in the oven! Lower the lights in the livingroom so it's not so bright and remember, your guests are there to see you and your family, not how clean your house is!! Just enjoy.

I have two kids also and I know what you mean about it always being a mess... it comes with kids! The easiest way I know how to get a good cleaning done WITH kids in the house is to make it into a game.....I set a timer for about 10 minutes longer then you think it should take (gives them time to dawdle) and then you tell them that something is hidden (please hide something....I use a dollar or a video game or candy sometimes) and you need help to find it.....Hide it in a room you are going to clean last. Then tell them to make it more fun you are going to set a timer and make it a race.....then set your timer.....huddle up.... make a game plan of what to clean first then second and so on...and make a mad dash for cleaning....its makes it more fun and they (well mine at least) actually dont think they are cleaning but they are playing a game with MOM. We all know that is all they ever really want is some good fun times with a parent. Good luck and make it fun!!!

Do the dishes first...most time consuming. Next quickly wipe down the surfaces. Pick up things on living room floor. Then wipe down any other surfaces that need it, and finally sweep. It wont hurt to spray alittle air freshner. That is the quickest way to get the job done.

I had 3 kids and my house stayed spotless. Have your kids help you. Offer to pay them if you have to.
