Hester and Dimsdale are as different as night and day. Hester has a very deep pool of inner strength, and also a high degree of personal integrity. She refuses to compromise with what she knows to be right, even when her silence means being cast out of acceptable society. Dimsdale, on the other hand, is a coward and a weasle, who spends literally years hiding his crimes AGAINST HESTER from the other citizens of the town. He condemns Hester publically for something he helped produce - a child. Yet, he never takes responsibility for his act of passion on any level.
