I began my teaching career in 1963. Our inservices were not much different that they are today. Reading and Math were the focus. Class size was a problem. 40 children in a room was not unusual. Special education was growing and teachers needed no special training to take the classes. I got a class called Special Ed educable because I had a psychology class in college. Inservice covered what handwriting the district had chosen to be taught. People were moving around for the first time so inservice had to cover how to assess new students' skill level. Title I, a government program for remediation came into being. Assessment grew in importance. A new idea of responsibility came into being as quality declined. Who is responsible for lower grade, home, school, kid? The blame game began.
it was the day of the flower children. Free thought, free ideas, drugs. Inservice dealt with how to teach the children of the druggies.
