.org (organization) is a generic top-level domain used in the Internet's Domain Name System. .org is occasionally associated with the open source/free software movement, as opposed to the .com domains used mostly by companies. While it is true that many open source projects use .org domains (OpenOffice.org even has it in the product name), most .org domains do not qualify for this generalization, as the idea is not about software, but rather that the organization is likely to be a non profit one.

The original top-level domains are: .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, .mil
.com = for commercial companies
.net = for network companies (internet, web hosting, etc)
.org = non-profit organizations
.edu = schools
.gov = government institutions
.mil = the military
There is now a gray area between the top three as many companies do not follow these guidelines anymore.
