I am in zone 8, eatern north carolina (not the coastal region) and have these weird fungus in my yard. They are the size of baseballs, round, brown and have brown powder(spores?) on them. They are very heavy for their size and when opened look something like the inside of a pomagranate. so much so that I thought someone had thrown a pom into my yard and it'd rotted. Anyway, these fungus are found under my pine straw and leaves so seem to prefer the dark. Rain does not seem to have much effect on their appearance. Does anybody know what this mysterious fungus is and if it's edible?

Take samples to your local Retail Nusery outlet. There should be a Certified Nusery specialist that should know the fungus.
Then they also can let you know if its harmful or how to clear it out of your garden or yard area. However for safety sake use gloves so not to expose to skin if you may have sentive skin rashes. Then wash your hands good soap and water. However
when you transport the sample keep the air out of the bag if its plastic. If its brown bag keep the air out of it also. This is to prevent moisture causing additional fungus spores starting.
Never eat any spores or fungus toll stools, mushrroms until you can prove they are eatable by certified Nusery person.
There is to much possibilty that they can get you sick or may kill you also. It is better to errior on caution then to be wrong and get sick or die.

The dust from these spores can cause health issues if inhaled, so don't breathe the dust. They will die soon, as winter is coming.

Don't attempt to eat it unless you get the fungus properly identified first. Your description isn't enough to go on, so treat them as poisonous toadstools in the meantime.

You should get something to put down because they spreed. They live were it is dark and damp.

yes, sound like a puffball if u kick it does a cloud off dust come of it if so it,s a puffball
