Well I remember reading once that you have to have the calcium while you are young, that after a certain age (40?) your body simply doesn't absorb it the way it did when your bones were growing. Still when you take calcium you should also take it with vitamin D which helps bones absorb the calcium. There are some serious drugs out there that build bone over years but I think they cause damage otherwise but still if you have serious osteo, I guess you don't have a choice.
Read up on your vitamins and how best to take them. Certain foods help the absorption. Things like POP actually rob your bones of calcium and should be avoided.

All women lay down their calcium during their teen years and start leeching it around 35 or so...IF you have a genetic history of bone loss or are a thin white or asian woman who drank lots of soda and ate lots of red meat and smoked or are over 45(as you are) then assume(as you seem to be doing) that you have significant bone loss(Exercise has not proven to be helpful in this ; Younger women who do not eat properly and exercise like crazy things--you KNOW who you are--are being diagnosed with osteoporsis at younger and younger ages)
BUT if you think you have it then it is possible to get a free bone scan at any hospital during those free clinic or women's clinic days. Look in the paper on Sunday or call around and ask...they will tell you what to do.
buy calcium(the calcium in OSCAL is the calcium form you want) take this form as directed or you will just be building a birdbath in your gut out of cheap calcium...you do need vitamin D with that ..and bone bearing exercise to help keep the bone you have..it is never too late and the new drugs do help to rebuild what is lost; but you have to actually do something other than think about it...more elderly die from complications of hip fractures than breast and colon cancer combined..

if you wish to take calcium supplements, get only Calcium CITRATE, all other forms of calcium, like calcium gluconate can cause kidney stones over time. Take 300 mg in three divided doses at least six hours apart every day. Also, be sure to get enough Vitamin D so you can absorb the calcium citrate.

600 mg of calcium in the morning, 600 mg of calcium in the evenings. Do not take it with magnesium, as that can interfere with the absorption of the calcium. Do weight bearing exercises daily and try to keep your weight at a healthy level.
