I have not been having regular periods in the past 2 years. I am of fairly good health, just a little overweight. I was regular until about the age of 21 (5 years ago), when I went on birth control. Since then, I have times when I have no period at all, then years when I'm regular.

I went to see my doctor about a year ago for this and another problem I was having (stomach pains) and he could not find anything wrong with me - my hormones/thyroid are fine and everything. I have been avoiding going back since he never really solved my problems, just dismissing them as being 'stress related' and I do not have medical insurance and can not afford to pay the high costs of a doctor visit if he is going to tell me the same thing for this or have me do a bunch of crazy tests.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any serious complications that could arise from not having a period - or should I definitely go to the doctor?

The "birth control" I mentioned was oral birth control pills - I forget which kind they were - orthotricyclyne or something like that. I have not been on any other form of birth control (other than condoms) - and not since I stopped taking the pill 5 years ago.

Hope this helps! Thanks for the help!

I would ask a different doctor, but it could be just related to the BC. Are you still taking them? Some BCPs will cause irregularities in your periods. When I started taking Orthocycline I started have excrutiatingly painful periods that were irregular. I've always had irregular periods due to a hormone imbalance, but we also have ovarian and uteran cancer in the family so it worries me that no doctor I go to seems to take it seriously, they just write it off as a hormone imbalance and don't even test for cancer.

Go to a doctor who is going to listen to your compliants. It could just be the BCP or it could be something a little more serious. Irregular periods can lead to ovarian systs, so it's good to get it straightened out even if you just need to change BCP.

If you are using another BC method other than BCPs though, like the shots or sticks, they tend to do this, so don't worry as much, just as the person who gives them to you if this is typical.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I would say that not having a period is a definite reason to go to the Dr.

I to have irregular periods and went for close to a year without one at all and now I do have one almost every month but sometimes I still miss one here and there or it'll come but be a week or 2 late.

You just need to find a dr. who takes you seriously and if he orders tests then go get them done...He wouldn't order them for nothing...He must think something will come back in the results.

Good Luck!

It's possible that's your amenorrhea is due to the method or formula of contraception you use. I don't see that mentioned here. You also didn't describe the intervals between periods when you're irregular. But you have to ovulate to have a period. Try phoning your doctor with your questions. You may be able to get an answer without a visit. Best of luck.

I would say yes.

But, go to a different doctor since you're not happy with your present one. Try going to a woman gyn. They take woman's complaints seriously.

Go to doctor,
Have them check your hormones again. I was having same problem and once they checked my hormone levels....it turns out I'm in menopause...UGH. I'm only 40.

you could be pregnant are you? otherwise if you have no other symptoms at this time it is probably just your body being a woman.

maybe you should find another doctor if you are not happy with what your present doctor is doing (or not doing) for your complaints.
