Actually blind people can check out audio books for free.
It's called Talking Book Service. Books (audio) are mailed free
to the person's home. When the blind person is finish listening to
the book they flip the card over and mail it back the their regional library. Here is more information for the program and eligibility
requirements. People with reading disabilities are also able to use the service.

Audio books cost more than a book because they have to pay the reader of the book, the author, produce it on CD or tape/ make a case, design a cover, etc.
But the good news is if you use your local library books are free,
audiobooks are free, computers are free, CD's are, DVD's are
free, downloadable audio/ ebooks are FREE!!!

it is a matter of materials used for product not discrimination, blind people can read braille ,and audio books are for everyone ,braille is specifically made for the blind, if a blind person chooses to use audio then they pay for convienience so your logic is flawed cause then one could argue that chopped fresh onions and produce like potatoes, that one can buy in the grocery store for convience should not be higher priced cause it is discrimination against arthritis sufferers and carpal tunnel syndrome people etc, also meat that is thinly sliced and steaks and all that specially cut from the meat counter would be guilty of this psuedodiscrimination theory, nice , and good thinking but not correct

No..peole are needed and paid to read these books, there is much more work involved in these types of books.
I know that in Canada (my son has multiple disabilities, he isn't blind) so he gets a disability pension and doesn't have to pay for these books, especially the ones needed for college. He can also get books to read for just enjoyment if he wanted.

It costs more to have someone read the book, at least for a commercially produced recording. There are lots of volunteer reading for the blind services that aren't as expensive.
If you factor in the recording engineer/s, the fee for the studio (takes a long time to read a book aloud), the "talent" (person/s reading), it will cost more, even given the low cost of the actual piece of plastic it's put onto.

Commercially produced audio books ARE NOT FOR BLIND PEOPLE. If they were, then why does the packaging have PICTURES and WORDS?
There are many books available for blind people to read (Braille) and listen to that are free.

Simple. It cost more to produce.
A book must be written, edited, published and distrubuted. An Audio book involves and extra step - paying someone, often a well known actor/ess, to come in a read the book.

I have often wondered that. I guess it is to pay for the talent who is reading it. Like Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I was going to buy one of them on audio thinking it would cost 15 or 20 bucks. Nope $59.99. I was shocked. Needless to say I didn't. There has to be a cheaper way I agree. Discount stores don't always have what you want either.

a book is paper.
an audio book requires much more production, including paying the reader, renting the studio, mixing and editing the audio, packaging, design, production, etc.

You have to pay someone for their time to read the books you can't find the time to read. Unfortunatley the blind or illiterate are affected in this. The same could also be said about clothing. I have to pay as much for my small clothing as an obese person. Babies clothing is no cheaper than ours. Go figure...
