I went thru that I didn't actually do it my husband did and it did not work either, the hospital should of given you a bulb suction to take home those work better then the ones you buy at the store. Maybe you can go to the hospital where you delivered and ask them for one if not just buy one at target, wal-mart or whatevers by you and also get some vicks vapor rub and take your baby a nice warm bath to loosen the mucus then use the suction to get as much out as you can then rub babys back ,chest and bottom of feet with vicks put socks on and also put very little below nostrils and forehead trust me it works!!!!

I have heard of this but have never done it. I got a snot sucker thing from the chemist, it wasn't expensive. failing that, get some saline drops (just like salty water) helps to bring down the snot and clear babies nose. I also got some snuffle babe (same as vics but not nearly as strong) and put it on a plastic back big and hang near babies cot. It will go soon but personally I would be too scared to try the sucking thing incase you suffocate the baby.
Hope this helps.

I have two sisters who do it and I hate it for their babies. Its so gross.
But yeah its also heartbreaking to hear a baby gargling her or his mucus at night.
My sisters do it because they feel the booger snatcher bruises inside of the nose and has too much suction,
when they can control the suction and not bruise inside nose.
I personally won't do it if I ever have kids, but I would speak to a doctor about the sucking of the nose

Woman, get the suction bulb and a dab of Vicks under the nose and get sucking snot out of your mind. (CRAZY) Having a cool mist humidifier in your baby's room when he or she is sleeping is also a must. I have raised a daughter (23) and a son (20) and now a grandson 2 1/2 and another on the way, and I have never heard of anything like that in my life..........My grandmother raised me in the south, and as old fashion as she was and as many babies that were around that is one I have NEVER heard!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you serious? Or seriously on crack? Cause thats friggin nasty!! Go to your local Walmart/Kmart/CVS whatever is in your town and buy what is called a bulb syringe for your child, and use that. You never use your mouth so suck mucus out! Unless they did that 150 years ago I don't know but this is 2006 my dear, go to the store, it's like $2. Good Luck to you.

As a Paramedic and mother of 2, I would definitely advise against manually sucking out the mucus from your childs nose. For starters, it is very unsanitary, and you can do more damage than good. I know most new parents listen to the old wives tales, heck I heard quite a few from my now EX mother in law. She would tell me things like pouring pee down my sons ear for an ear-ache, putting him in a pillowcase and flipping him over like a pancake to regulate his days and nights, yadda yadda yadda. Please don't fall into the traps that most new young parents do. Always always ALWAYS ask the advice from a professional like a doctor or even a pharmacist. They will not steer you wrong, I assure you. As for her nasal congestion, buying a nasal aspirator is your best bet. They are very inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to clean. Good luck.

I've heard of it being done, but I don't think I'd do it unless, like you said, she basically can't breath for all the snot!-- Those suction blub things work pretty well... .. And some decongestant medicine before she goes to bed would probably help clear her up at least until morning!

I got a suction bulb for free from the hospital where my daughter was born. That's just gross to suck the snot out yourself. If you don't have one just go buy one they're really cheap.
Here's instructions on how to use the bulb.

No I have never sucked snot. You need to get a nasal aspirator. You should have been sent home with one from the hospital. (The large blue suction device they used to suck the babies mouth and nose at delivery???) Go get one, they are sold everywhere and are a neccessity for babies. I still use it on my 2 year olds. Babies are unable to clear the mucus on their own effectively and have very small nasal passages so they easily get "congested". Worse comes to worse you can suck it out with your mouth. (Seriously though, we are not that primitive in America, go buy one today)

its certainly not something i would try or recommend if u want to try that method then buy the suction cup
i found that gently rubbing side of nose then using tissue, wipe across nose until u catch bit of snot rest will follow. i dont recommend cotton buds i made my daughters nose bleed by putting too far up when she was 3 weeks have never done it since x
