Put up posters, post leaflets, tell friends and make exciting and appealing ideas. Remember if its for an animal shelter invited people to bring their animals and donate any unwanted junk.
You could have animal competitions with prizes (eg - cutest puppy, biggest dog, smallest dog) the prizes don't have to cost much, if fact they could be stuff someone donated (make sure it's not the same person you give it too!!!

think of a theme that you know people would participate in IE: tombola , fete, raffle, gala then advertise it ask for donations you could use as prizes check to see if you need a license first as the public and money are involved then the profit you make donate to the shelter of your choice invite the local news reporter to prove to the public who donated and things that there money was put to good use and thank everyone for there support.. good luck

Walk around your neighborhood and tell people who are out. Post a note at the library, front of your street, and tell friends and family. See if stores would let you put out jars near the register, but make sure you trust the store. They would probably agree so they would be seen as kind. Make dog toys, treats, beaded geckos, key chains, or cupcakes and sell them for a good cause.

Talk to your near by high school and work something out. Advertising is the best way, and there are lots of H.S. students who want/likes to help and since it's animals that's a plus. I've done something like this too, but instead of animals, it was helping cancer patients. Best way is advertising and getting help from High school students. They do wonders and if it is successful, then you may do it again in the near future.
Hope this helps! :)

Typically the BOARD OF DIRECTORS for the shelter arranges this.. if you want to do something on your own you should contact them first and discuss it with them...
I have worked on many fund raisers... garage sales, dog jog, auctions, bingos... etc

GO TO THE SHELTER AND TALK TO THEM. LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. GO FROM THERE.
