Can I install Windows XP but keep the previous programmes I have before the instillation. I have no way of backing up to another disk at the present.

If you are upgrading a previous version of Windows then your programs that are compatible should remain usable. (According to Microsoft). If you are installing a new full version of Windows XP then no.

The biggest issue you will experience is if you are upgrading then Windows XP will keep the registry entries that the other programs have made to your register, but it is possible some of these will not work after the upgrade due to the changes Windows XP will make to the placement of the components it uses.

In other words Windows XP makes the attempt to keep your old programs intact and usable, but sometimes will fail to do so.

If you are installing XP as an upgrade with an Upgrade XP disc then it will configure the programmes that will run with it and it gives a list of the one that will not, But if you are installing a shiny new XP then it will wipe out every thing else ( it will ask if you want to first )

You can.. But what you have to be careful of is when you set it up. XP gives you the option to reformat your drive to ntfs. You must tell it to leave the drive as it is. XP can read fat 32 but.. for example.. Win 98 can`t read an ntfs partition. I`ve done it many times. But if you are reinstalling XP you should have no problem. Remembering though that some software that has a few specific files might need to be reinstalled under windows. This wont apply if you have one of those restoration cd`s that come with a Dell pc for instance. They wipe the lot..Avoid using them.If you have a bootable windows cd or dvd you should be ok... So Reinstall and tell the setup to leave the file system as it is... I cant think of any reason why it shouldnt work. Always does ok with me and I aint no expert..A tip .. If you have some docs you must save.. If you can Zip or Rar them and email them to yourself..

To be honest use windows backup wizard and do a fresh install of windows xp as it might cause issues when you reinstall it. A shiny new install of windows xp is what i recommend as it will make your pc run although quicker and also if any spy-ware/ad-ware or viruses in the background will be deleted as well. check out www.tweakxp.com for lots of hints and tips on everything xp related

yes you can only if you have two drives(mean c:/ and d:/) you can back them up at a drive that you would not be using to installing Win Xp then you can save them and start the setup....
see this will actually change your system file and your softwares that were running on the computer will not work but if you are trying to save stuff like pictures or doccuments then its ok
because your softwares require new installation with new OS
And one thing remember not to format the drive in which you had saved your stuff

If you are already running XP, you can just perform a repair install.
