Your desktop isn't a "file" - it's a location.
Right-click on the desktop, choose PROPERTIES and go to the tab that says DESKTOP.
In the list of pictures, scroll to the top and choose NONE. Click OK you now have no picture for a wallpaper.

Select the file and press the delete key.

Go to desktop preferences and change the image, look it up and change ot o one you like.

right click, delete or drag to trash or recycle bin
