maybe its a ritual or good luck omen. not all players do it though. maybe its something to do with personally feeling the ground they're about to play on: get a feel for how hard/soft it is.

To decide whether to pull their socks over their knees if the ground is too hard and they fall over - just to protect their immac'd legs from grazes

its a superstition, give them some kind of mental comfort by touching the pitch on which thry will perform.
