She asked me over the phone what I do for a living and why I choose to do what I do. I lied that I love my job, when I don't. What is the best way to tell her that I hate my job and wish that I had never gotten into this profession. I don't know why I went to the school that I went to. However, I think I have finally found my calling. How do I not sound like a dumbass. BY the way, she is a lawyer and I am a drafter.

You don't have to snow her all at once with the information. Tell her that things have changed about how you view your job. She may be a good sounding board or offer good suggestions. The key is to introduce the information about your career shift slowly so you don't come off as a complete flake. Good luck.

You've already made yourself look like a dumbass by not telling her the truth. All you had to do was tell her what you did for a living (isn't that what she asked?) and WHY, she didn't ask if you LOVED your job she asked what and why you chose it. If you want to take the subject further be honest Tell her that you really don't enjoy what you are doing and are thinking about changing careers.

Just tell her the truth you can't go wrong with that. Many people don't like there jobs and change careers really nothing wrong with that. By the way my husband change careers and is so happy now..So just tell her I'm sure she will understand and you won't look like a dumbass =)

Well, I dunno... It's never a good idea to tell flat-out lies. You could always say that you do this and that, and you chose it because you thought it was a good idea at the time, or something vague like this. No need to lie that you "love" your job, but no need to say you "hate" it, either. As you get to know your date better, you can mention that your job doesn't excite you much anymore, and you were thinking about changing careers.

You simply say I hate this and I'm not sure what possesed me to get into it in the first place....your first mistake way lying in the beginning. Life is too short. You going to look MORE like a dumb *** if you spend your life doing something you hate:)

"i don't like my job anymore and i am looking to branch out in a different direction" "i am no longer getting what i need from my career choice" (this says you are not opposed to change and take the initiative to make something you don't like to what you want)
