No, I wouldn't give it back, nor would I spend it, I'd just wait for them to reclaim it.

Ooooo.. a morale questions.. Lessee.. On the one hand, I really could use the money, but on the other hand, it would seem like the right thing to do, right? However, the way I see it is.. that's the bank's fault for putting the money into my account. The bank has over billions and billions of dollars already, plus they already screw me out of money by charging me fees and rates. So, to answer your question, no, I wouldn't own up to it and give it back. $1000 bucks is nothing to the bank. They can easily replace it in the blink of an eye..

Of course I would. I really want everything that is mine but I'm not after something that belongs to others. Now that is my ethical position. From a practical perspective, a $1000 banking error will be discovered within 90 days tops and in reality probably on the following business day.

Of course not, I work for an accountant so I know that banks always find their mistakes. So if you just keep it you will more then likely have to pay it back in the future and what if you don't have it then. The say money is the root of all evil, but I think its the way people act about it. So I would, for sure, bring it to my banks attention, any decent person would. Beside if you need money that bad you should think about getting a job(or a better job, if you have one already).

this actually happened to me.
i checked my account a year or so back and found an extra £1000 had appeared.
i was told that if it was still there after 3 months it was mine to keep so i didn't touch it and unfortunately it went before the time was up and i got a nice letter of apology from the bank

Yes I would give it back. I have had large amounts of money deposited into my account by mistake more than once and I always let the bank know. In few instances they let me keep it.

It happened to me when I got married. I went to bank and £600 was deposited into my account. I questioned it and the bank said if it's in your account it's your money! This went on for 3 months and money was being put in my account every month, and every month I would report it. So whoever was doing it why have you stopped?

Sure, as the bank will find out sooner or later and you'll be legally obligated to return it. It happened to me once. They deposited 3500 instead of 350, they figured it out a week later and took it out of my account without even telling me. It wasn't until a week or so later I even noticed it on the statement. Now if it was like $1M, I would withdraw it and move to Switzerland or something.

this just happened to my gf and i. we have a joint account to use for vacations and we saw $1000 deposited in there. well we sent an email to the bank and they responded that they are not able to process our request at this time and to contact the toll-free number for futher information and regret for any inconvenience.
they weren't much help, but at least we tried contacting them.
at first i didn't even consider taking the money, but now it's starting to sound better and better. especially after she lost the digital camera i bought her for her birthday last night at a restaurant.
if we withdraw the money, we'll probably end up closing the account.

Yes, everyone knows banks will find the mistake if they give you something now of course if they screw up the account and take money then good luck. But eventually they would figure it out and somehow end up taking twice as much back!LOL

Yes, I would.I work in a bank.If a mistake is made,it is always found and if someone didn't own up to it,the bank would correct the error anyway, eventually. I would notify the bank even if I didn't work for them. Dishonesty does not pay.
