I am feeling a little angry today towards the way things work. Let me try to sum this up, I was a smoker, thought I was pregnant took a test, came out negative. 3 weeks later I found out I was pregnant, so I had been smoking that whole time, quit the day I found out. My son was born with a heart defect. Every other person I know smoked throughout their whole pregnancy and had healthy babies. That doesnt make sense. I wouldnt even go to a place where people smoked. How are you supposed to stop doing these things if you cant even know your pregnant until your a month or more along? I feel like this is my fault but what could I have done? UUUUGGGHHH!! Just having a bad day I think.

Anytime you have sex you have a chance to get pregnant. I don't imagine that the heart defect was because of smoking. It maybe hereditary or just a fluke. Just do the best you can for your son now and try not to dwell on the past. You can't change it, so let it go.

If you are trying to be pregnant, you have to do all you can to be as healthy as you can - no drinking, drugging or smoking. Same with your husband. These days, it seems more and more children are being affected by these things. I know what you mean about the smoking moms - but how in the world would you feel if your baby was the ONE with defects or anomalies because of your smoking. Plus, you or your friends don't know the effects it will have down the line. So, when you're trying, lead a very clean life!

Good for you for quiting! Sadly, this happens a lot. Just know that what you did for you baby in quiting the moment you knew, has helped him. I mean he could have died if you would have continued to smoke. Also remember second hand smoke is deadly...as it looks like you knew from staying away from other smokers...don't start smoking in the home again...now that you have quit...don't hurt your body starting up again...right! I am sorry your baby had a heart defect...I was born with one too. But sometimes, whether you smoke or not, defects happen and it may not be due to your smoking. You took the steps you had to when you knew and that is all that matters. Congrats on your baby. And Good Luck!

Whenever you are trying to get pregnant, or whenever you are having unprotected sex, you should be acting as though you are already pregnant. In other words, if you're sexually active and not on the pill and using protection, you should be taking prenatal vitamins and not smoking and not drinking, and not taking drugs.

That way, when you do one day find out you are pregnant, you will have been doing the right things all along! You shouldn't wait to adopt healthy habits until you find out you are pregnant.

That said, it seems highly unlikely that your baby's heart problem was caused by your smoking. In fact, you probably saved your boy from other serious problems by quitting so early in your pregnancy. Good job for quitting as soon as you found out!

I sure hope you stay a NONSMOKER because exposing your Little one to second-hand smoke is very very bad for him and can lead to asthma, emphysema, and cancer for him.

A lot of doctors will say if you are a heavy smoker before you are pregnant than the baby will have to work too hard to breath with his lungs if you quit after your first trimester. A lot of my friends didn't want to quit, so they were told to have 1 or 2 a day to help them, and the baby with breathing. If they work too hard, their lungs can collapse as they are growing. Most doctors will tell you that the baby is still very tiny (the size of your finger nail) at this point, and if you quit, nothing will happen to your baby and they won't even feel the effects of it!

Congrats!

It probably is a bad day.

But generally when the lables say things like "for those pregnant, nursing, or MAY BECOME PREGNANT" it means you had unprotected sex, or are having sex at all, and may become pregnant.

That said, theres reason why a women doesnt do things, like drink like a sailor and smoke like a chiney. EIther because she wants children one day, or is trying for children.

You dont stop doing something when you think you're pregnant, you do it when you think of becoming pregnant. That way you're not taking chances and your body is as its best.

BUt as for you, i doubt your babies heart issue was caused by your smoking, its not possible to rule it out completely, but more than likely it was simply genetics or some other unhelpable factor.

Its important not to have a lot of condemnation in your life or self blame...beuase thats bad for you and the baby too.

The harsh but true answer is that people should be practicing a lifestyle that is pregnancy friendly all the time...not just when they think they are pregnant. As people we need to live in a healthy environment....not play games with our bodies to suit the moment.

Healthy diet, excercise, drug-free, smoke-free, alchohol free, whats the downside?

There's nothing you can do to protect the baby until you know your going to have one. There could be many reasons that the baby had a heart problem.

Just be happy that you have a child and you can help him live a happy healthy life by not smoking now.

The heart defect might not have been from smoking at all. I cant imagine smoking for a month would even do any damage.
