Bozeman is nice, but it just got ranked higher than Jackson Hole for desired areas to live. It is expensive, but a great place to live.

Kalispell, Whitefish, and Bigfork are lovely places, too. AND depending on how far is too far from a "city" northwest of Kalispell is beautiful (real estate is cheaper, too)

Your best bet is Bozeman. It's a College town, really nice architecture, decent cost of living, nice mix of people, plenty of good businesses, not too far north, great trout fishing, nice weather...
I haven't been up there since my dad passed away, he was a guide on Nelson Spring Creek Ranch in Livingston. So I can't tell you how much a decent hotel would be there for 2 Adults and a child - it may also depend on the season. I bet you can get 2 rooms there for anywhere from $75 each to "sky's the limit".

Good Luck!

If you are looking for skiing or snowboarding then Bozeman or Big Sky are the way to go. Not only are they beautiful but there are many more thing to do. Average hotel prices in Bozeman are $90. Much more in Big Sky. It would be better to stay in Bozeman and travel to Big Sky. Also there is West Yellowstone, very cute, a good family vacation and close to Yellowstone National park. There is very much to see and do if you like the outdoors. Rooms here are about $90 a night. Missoula is also nice a little bigger and about $120 a night. Not quite as beautiful.
