Check all the connections to the starter and make sure they are good and tight. If they are, the chances are it is the starter. Pull the negative battery terminal, then label and disconnect the wires (probably two or three) from the starter. Remove the two or three bolts, pull it straight out, and take it in to the parts shop. They will test it and sell you a new one if you need it. Installing it the reverse of removing.

presuming the engine doesnt even turn over ! ( this needs to be communicated first ) when trying to start listen for a distinct click , for a starter motor to work it needs to be engaged via a starter solenoid , no click no solenoid , they can some times stick and require only a tap ( say with a light hammer ) to release it or need replacing if youre unlucky , if you can identify the starter motor it self the solenoid will be a small cylinder shaped object attached to the side of it , possibly 2 inch round 3inch long , tap this , this is presuming you have power to light all dash lights ( head lights/ heater etc even ? ) as normal and its not the battery

Buy some EasyStart from Halfords. Spray it in the inlet/air intake for 3-5 seconds and then try a bumpstart.

By the sound of things, you have problems.....

Could be any combination of the following or more:

HT Leads
Spark
Fuel pump
Distributor/points etc
ECU
Knackered carb
Piston rings
Timing belt may have slipped a tooth so the timing may be out
Head Gasket
Oil pressure switch

Without looking I really couldn't say. But try the Easy Start.

at the worst, the engine is seized up so the starter can't turn the flywheel and when you try to push start it, it will act like you hit the brakes when you release the clutch.
