Is it because they are liberals? Or do conservatives REALLY want to keep our tax dollars here and invest them in welfare for US citizens? Isn't giving to charities ENOUGH? This is in regards to Bill GAtes and Bono, two very rich liberals who have created foundations with their OWN wealth, and convinced several OTHERS with wealth to donate as well. Why is that so wrong? Becasue they ask for others to pitch in as well? You could always say no...they aren't law makers, it's not like they could raise yuor taxes...

RLP, I don't remember ANYBODY ever being able to DEMAND money from us. Like I said, you just say no. I', glad they asked others for money, it made the contribution so much more. But you're right, we should ALL give what we can afford...even Bono.

MEL T, most of the advances in science throughout history have come from federally funded research. And my brother, a quadriplegic, would be one of those who would benefit from EMBRYONIC stem cell research. I won't get into it all, it is pretty complex, but brain and spinal stem cells do NOT regenerate by themsleves, or with adult stem cells. They DO regenerate with EMBRYONIC stem cells. And none of thet research was EVER conducted on aborted fetuses, it all came from 2 sources, both fertilized eggs that would have been destroyed. I wonder how many of these fertilized eggs Bush and his family destroyed after they were successful with the twins? i wonder how many people like my brother would have a better quality of life had they not been destroyed? Sorry, personal, sensitive subject for me. But luckily, you don't have to donate ANYTHING you don't want...unlike me, who HAS to pay for this war...

There are lots of IDIOTS here. Sometimes I want to give up!
Charity is important - more power to people who want to help! Everyone has a right to criticize, but it would be good if people spent their time helping others instead. (To be honest, I do get a little irritated occasionally that U2 isn't making music, but what the heck is more important? Bono could be accused of being on an ego trip by cynics, but didn't Jesus even say something about people doing good things being criticized? Some folks are just so . . . jerky!)
Who here has done ANYTHING recently to help our veterans? Just write a letter to "any soldier" and tell them about yourself and that you hope they get home safe. They love mail! There are web sites that will forward it.
I just this morning gave to a fund that arranges programs for law students to be interns by helping poor people get legal representation. Helps the law students get experience, and helps the poor people. Funds like this need the money because lawyers going into these fields make nothing, compared to the corporate types.
I also donate time, money and services to two churches - it's a long story - and a few other places.
No, I'm not auditioning for sainthood. Truth is, I almost dodged the charity call today before my conscience got the best of me! But we can ALL do something. Pick a cause that means something to you, and help make it happen. Those who are lazy just complain - they go through life without knowing the JOY of working for positive change.
Sorry for the sermon but I get angry when folks have nothing but NEGATIVITY. Sheesh!!!

I applaud the issues of both Bono and Bill Gates.
On the other hand I do not applaud Michael J Fox's recent commercials for stem cell research. He has in fact started a foundation that has raised huge amounts of money for research (stem cells). However, he also believes that the federal government should fund the embryonic research against the belief system of the present majority. Pharmaceutical companies do the vast majority of investment in medical research in this country. Why is this an issue at all? The money is there.
EDIT:
I personally, am all for embryonic research. Although they have had success in spinal injuries using umbilical blood stem cells in Korea. Some spinal regeneration too. That's actually federally funded too. I have no "attachment" to the human embryo. Don't understand it, but some people hold it dear. I respect that. Also, there is much, much R&D done through actual pharmaceutical companies including things like the Aids cocktail, etc.

It is not okay. Bill Gates is a good example. The ultra-rich legacy in this country can't stand him because he comes from outside what people refer to as the 'money stream'. So what they do is inject ridicule in to the American dialogue to try and keep him from getting too popular. It is about control.
Memo to Mel T: Actually, the majority of Americans want to expand stem cell research, and also many great medical discoveries were funded by federal dollars.

Charity is fine. The problem with most liberals is that they believe money should be forcefully taken from wage-earners by the government and redistributed. That's not charity --- it's theft.
Regarding Bono in particular, he runs his own charity but he constantly spews his inane, Marxist drivel, which turns a lot of people off.

Who is criticizing them? In Bono's case, he has stated that more aid should go to Africa, yet tried to get another law passed in his homeland that would have drastically cut his taxes to pay for the aid he wanted. Hypocrite much? INRE: Bill Gates, I haven't seen anyone on this place or anywhere question his foundation.

I generally applaud people who give to charities. Charities should be private enterprise instead of a public charge.
However while some people engage in acts of charity to better the world, such as Bono, Gate, Paul McCartney and Warren Buffet (to name just a few). There are others who make sure that when they do acts of charity or establish foundations to make the world a better place they do so in front of cameras, not to advertise their cause, but to advertise themselves. People like that are hypocrites.
I give to charities, both in time and money. And as I said, I applaud all others who do, but those who beg me to dig deeper while they consider the time they donated to make the commercial a suitable donation, are beneath contempt in my book.

I criticize Bill Gates because of the monopoly he has in the computer industry, and Bono for his politics. I don't criticize them for their philanthropy. But, people that do have the right to. Doesn't mean they are correct, though, or that you have to agree with them.

If Bill and BONO want to give to charity - GOD BLESS THEM.
The criticism only comes into play when they DEMAND that everyone give to their charity and SAY we should pay more taxes. Give what YOU want to give and I will do the same. If you GIVE for glory on earth - that is wrong. We do not give in grand style and only God needs to know what we do.

Sorry, I haven't heard anyone criticize these wealthy people for giving to charities. Besides, they probably help themselves since it's a tax write-off.
