The game was delayed as the Engerlund officials discussed the details of what would happen in the event of Germania winning the game and insulting Her Majesty, which was strange because she is German!
Well, the linesmen and referee were left in no doubt that Engerlund should win the World Cup and whatever happened, from the ball being close enough to the line to fans being on the pitch while play was in motion, nothing should stop Engerlund from winning the game.
Engerlund had played all their games at Wembley showing the British sense of fair play - as long as it suited THEM - and the filthy Germanians, who had started two wars not long before, had to be made an example of.
The press were called in and these barely-educated men in their trilbies and raincoats were made to swear an oath to report on the forthcoming events for the rest of their lives, after which their replacements would always find an excuse, no matter how incongruous, to dredge it all up again.
This tradition has been nobly upheld.
Well Engerlund somehow managed to win the game and with it the Jules Rimet trophy, which had been eaten by a dog only days before the occasion.
The Queen was moderately peeved about her side losing and remained stoic throughout the celebrations.
The robot named Alf Ramsey was almost lifelike and it was a great time to be British.
Unless you were Scottish as it was the worst day of your life.
A year later the Scots hooligans turned up at Wembley and beat the World Champions.
They did not just win the game but they taunted their opponents with a bit of ball-sitting and playing 'keepie-up' to make the Engerlund team very angry indeed.
The robot named Alf Ramsey could only say one word 'animals' over and over and even English people realised he was not human and that the technology was pretty crude, even for 1967.
Engerlund were never allowed to play all their World Cup games at Wembley again or fiddle with the rule book and that is why they have never been any good since then.
The Queen must be mightlily relieved.
Good night and God bless!

I dunno about 1966 but it was definitely the 1974 final that was delayed because the corner flags were missing - its in the official film of that world cup

Because I was on a camp site in Spain and all the Germans had put towels on the chairs in the TV Room - we had to wait for some Belgian Friends to tune in their High Frequency radio to a Radio station.
