ok. i know this had to have been a crank call..i have two cell phones. some jerk off just called me with a computerized a voice and said they were my alter ego and to get off of my lazy azz blah blah blah. but the kicker is that on the caller ID, it listed my OTHER cell phone number. so basically they had some code where they could do this. am i just old and out of the loop? how did they do it? it had to have been someone i knew b/c they used specific details and my name.

to me, the kicker was that the voice was interacting with me. it was definitely a live "computerized" voice. so it was a bit spooky. i have no idea who did it, either.

caller id numbers can be faked on some VOIP services - the new internet telephony technology. you can read more about it here:
http://www.securityfocus.com/news/9061

and even more here:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=voip+%22caller+id%22+faked&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

it will be someone you either know well or who you've given your cell phone number to, because they obviously need to input your number both to call you and for the spoofed caller id number.

the fact that the voice had been 'computerized' just strengthens the argument that they called you from a home computer because there is oodles of free software available which will change your voice as you speak into the microphone plugged into your pc.

caller id spoofing pretty much ALWAYS requires a computer somwhere down the line because a normal phone - whether cell phone or landline - of course would not let you alter the caller id being sent down the line.

anyone with a small amount of intelligence can pull this off on their own with their own pc setup, but of course like anything there are websites about which make it easier for people:

I got one of those calls too! I don't know how but this kind of crap needs to be illegal and brought to a screeching halt. When someone can use your number to call anyone and say anything it's scary.

THERE IS A DEVICE THAT CAN BE PURCHASE. THIS DEVICE WILL ALLOW YOU TO USE ANY NUMBER AND NAME U WANT AS A CALLER ID. THE PERSON WHO CALLED YOU COULD VERY WELL BE SOMEONE YOU KNOW. JUST DO A SEARCH ON CALLER IDS AND MAYBE THE INFORMATION YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS THERE.
