Was it a gradual change? Is it different in different States?

It was gradual, changed unevenly in both space and time throughout the US. During the mid-1850s, New England travelers were appalled that Chicago published newspapers on Sunday. I think western cities opened on Sunday because they were less controlled by laws made by strict, religiously minded folks. I remember only 25 years ago when nearly every store closed at 5pm on Sunday, but now everything is open until regular night hours. But I think nearly everywhere has something open 24/7 anymore.
