Perhaps it is a bizarre extention of the maternal instinct.
Small = cute = want to look after
(although skip the last stage when talking about ketchup bottles)

my opinion is that girls relate small things with babies and they LOVE babies. Women have that instinct. They want to nurture something . . . anything! My friend Tess takes me to the pet store to look at hamster beds and other bizarre accessories because she's so fascinated by them. These small things give her genuine happiness. She doesn't even have a hamster! She just likes the idea of having baby sized furniture for the animals. So yea, I've concluded that what she really wants is a baby, but since thats not very conventional at thsi time in her life, she'll settle for the small things that give her happiness.

I agree with you, I don't use the word cute very often. I suppose it's something instilled by our mothers and grandmothers that things have to be cute.
I've always been somewhat of a tomboy, so "cute" is pretty much a word I reserve for special occasion, or when I'm being sarcastic ;)

Women like small cute things because they like taking care of things smaller than themselves. Sort of a creepy mothering instinct. That would be my only guess because I still have no clue. I'm one of those girls too and I don't even know why I do it.

they just are cute, because they are dinky and sweet, and perfectly formed minis of the big version, I guess us girls are just soppy. The mini marmite jar was the cutest thing ever, but they stopped making it.
