Funny I saw this question, I just had my light turn on as well. As far as the new gas cap thing goes, I find that highly unlikely. However I do know sometimes when the gas is filled to high - or the cap is too loose or too tight the Service Engine Soon light will appear ( some gas caps it even says that the light will turn on sometimes) So you may have gotten the run around on the gas cap ordeal.
As far as the light itself, it means that there is a service (A/C, Electrical, mechanical etc) issue that will occur. It doesnt mean you need to fix your car and get everything inspected and looked at right away. It means that the "Computer" deteceted something wrong - or going to be wrong- and it is warning you.
So I would suggest asking a mechanic friend, or go to the shop - and ask them to do a diagnostic test on it, (tell them about the light)
What they will / should do is plug a computer into the Cars "chip/ computer", and they will receive a "Code". The code tells the mechanic what is wrong with the car. (i.e. A/C, starter, mechanical, fuel, engine, exhaust etc)
Hope this helps- or at least gives you some insight
Some links below may be able to give better details if you search around. Good luck

I have had the same problem with a 91 Ford Escort and with my 99 Grand Cherokee. If you don't tighten the gas gap at least 3 clicks the check engine/service engine light can come on. Other times, as it appears in your case, the gas cap can be faulty. Usually replacing the gas cap will do the trick by the next time you turn the car off and then on again. If not, at least give it a week or so (depending on how often you fill up) so that you can see what happens after you fill up next time.
It is common for those lights to turn on for stupid reasons and not turn on when you have a serious problem!

He may not have the capability to reset the alert. Only the more expensive computers can do this. Some only check the problem.
Usually when you leave a gas-cap off the car computer will read an error of "Exhaust leak, major." This is because the gas tank fumes are leaking out of the tank stem. The car computer thinks there is a hole somewher ein your exhaust system. But you may also have had a new problem since the other one was resolved. Check it out again and see if it reads the same error. if it does, don't worry about it.

There are a thousand electronic sensors in todays newer vehicles. if one of these sensors goes out it will make this service engine light come on. What I am saying is that it could be serious and it could not be. Take it to reputable mechanic or the dealership. It may be expensive to find out what is wrong now, but it would be less expensive than trying to rebuild the engine if something major is wrong.

Well it's a modern car, with no doubt lots of computer controlled dash indicator lamps, so it maybe the central processsor, which checks everything from the airbag circuit to alternator output, requires a resetting at the dealer? I'm sure you've checked, but could it be that the vehicle is actually coming up for servicing?!

Make sure the gas cap is sealed properly and "clicks" several times when sealing it (if you have that kind of gas cap). I have a '00 Montero Sport with the same problem...it has California emmision standards, so if it's time for an oil change, mine comes on as well.

I think you should go to a REAL mechanic that knows exactly what he/she is talking about instead of just giving his/her best guess.
