Yes and it would increase government control over the people, which equals oppression of the very element that gives the government its power. It is the people who are sovreign. National service is an awful idea that would infringe upon my inalieable right to liberty.

The armed services these days need skilled and motivated men, not a mass of bullet fodder. Similar considerations apply to most civilian jobs.

You don't specify what problems you think national service would sort out. However, I suspect more effective governement interventions would include: investment in adeqate numbers of jobs offering prospects for less qualified male school leavers, better organised education (not just thowing money at the problem and fiddling around with who controls schools), better community facilities such as sports grounds and social clubs, presented to be attractive to everybody including the less advantaged, decent housing opportunities for young single people. Where would the money come from? From getting young people to do productive work! - Whereas national service would have to be funded by the state.

I agree with you 100%
National Service would certainly sort out a few problems with the youth of this Country. I think however, that you would have to reintroduce the "Press Gangs" Can you imagine the "Hoodies" receiving a letter [If they can read] telling them to report to a particular barracks for basic training. They would tear it up and completely ignore it. Hence the press gangs. Once you got them there then I"m sure discipline would improve. Eventually as the system evolved over time, society in general would feel the benefit. Less crime etc. Then, maybe we can start on discipline in Schools.
I suppose we can all dream.
The Human Rights idiots would obviously object.

I think it's a good idea, people need more discipline than they receive in schools these days.
