With teacher shortages so high! Shouldn't the important thing be the children getting an education, what the teacher is wearing?

The problem was that the children were not getting the education that they needed. This was a class of children who were learning english as a second language and already had enough of a disadvantage learning it without having the teachers mouth occluded.
Mouth shape is important in learning any language, as is being able to hear the words clearly, also not possible when someone covers their face when talking.
Finally she did not wear her veil during the interview, and Islam does not dictate the veil must be worn, it is a cultural choice. There is also no reason to wear it in a class of children as modesty in front of children is not a requirement.
So that is the big deal.

A muslim teacher would not get a job in a specialised Christian school, such as a Roman Catholic school. Whether a Christian teacher would get job in a muslim school would depend on the school. Did the interviewers of this veiled woman not notice the veil during the interview? How long had this teacher been wearing a veil before it became an issue? This whole veil issue has been stirred up by the government to distract people from the internal divisions of the Labour Party. The result of the tribunal? Whatever suits the government.

I think that the current saga is more related to culture rather than anything else. A friend of mine is European and Christian; but when she went to work in Saudi Arabia for about two years, she had to wear the veil irrispective of her religion. In a few words people and religions will need to adapt to the culture within the country.
In the case of the muslim women teacher, if she is working in Europe and the culture is not to wear any veil, then veils must not be worn and this is the end of the story and with all due respect to Muslim communities.

It is because young children have problem with recognising facial expressions when they are small.
Most adults will know what facial expressions mean, I have trouble with facial expressions, the only ones I recognise is sad, happy and surprise. I can pick up on auras ans vibes (I am 38)
If the face is hidden it does not teach the children awareness of facial expression.
Also the shape of the mouth when learning to read or saying the alphabet is very important for children to see. Look at your mouth in a mirror as you say A E I O U, this may answer your question!

Firstly, she wasn't a teacher, she was a teaching assistant. There's no shortage of them.

Also, she was helping young children to read, when it is accepted that seeing the face is vital to help children form letters properly.

And from a personal point of view, I think that a facial covering, be it veil, balaclava or crash helmet is a barrier to communication. Since the classroom is an area where clear communication is vital, I don't think that the veil is appropriate dress in this situation.

The unfortunate side effect was that it gave our resident racists on YA the opportunity to trot out their tired old cliches and blame their own failures on the current scapegoat.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for the Teaching Assistant (not Teacher) who lost her post.

There is no way that you can interact with children when your face is covered.

Communication Skills teach you:

The way in which meaning is conveyed:

1. Facial expression - 55%
2. Tone of Voice - 38%
3. Words - 7%

No 1 is not possible with a veil.
No 2 is distorted.
No 3 is muffled

I have answered this question before and say it again, if these women, obviously fundamentalists, want to teach veiled they should go to Saudi Arabia ! I find it the height of insolents that Muslim women are provoking the current climate about their religion instead of calming the situation !
We are still a Christian country, even if it doesn't look like it in parts! If Muslims are the only people that breed Europe will be Muslim in 50 years !
I thankfully will be dead by than !

I don't think she was teaching Muslim kids and any way it is bloody England if the Muslims want to live in a Muslim society then let them go to Afghanistan or Iran and then they would not even have a choice of what to ware, as for the woman she would not even be allowed to work . They came to England to try and find a better life ( most of them ) and not to drag every body down to the life they have in their original countries,

I beleive in this society nowadays, anything and everything is an excuse. It all comes down to race and religion and it's wrong. I think the children shuld be listened too and all the nonsense should be cut out.

EXAMPLE: If i was to be arrested and manhandled in a rough way, i couldn't say 'Im white and i think they was out of order' the old bill would laugh at me.
