The first sign that my alternator was dying was the radio went dead and the lights started to dim. It stopped completely a couple of minutes later.

Yep. You are having alternator problems. Or you might need a new battery. Sometimes a car will behave similarly when you are badly in need of a tune-up. But I have blown the alternators on two cars, so I recognize the symptoms. And I don't mean that my alternators "failed". The altenator on my old Mazda literally fell apart (really old car from back when I was in college). The alternator in my Honda was one of the few recalls that Honda ever had and it also actually blew up (sparks, smoke, etc.). Winter is coming and you don't want to get stranded. Get your car looked at ASAP.

the car uses the battery to start and then runs off the alternator which is also charging the battery. alternator goes bad and car starts to use the battery to run but without the alternator charging it, it slowly drains power causing battery to die.

The alternator continually recharges the battery when the car is running and when the alternator isn't going bad.

Take it to autozone if you can get there, they will check it for nothing.
If the battery is going mabe it is low on water,if the altanator goes it wont carge back up enough to keep the car running.

When you try to start it, turn on your lights. have someone outside the car watch the lights. if they dim when you are trying to start it, your alternator is bad. It could also be that your battery is old.

your alternator is what keeps the battery charged. i would take it to a parts house like checkers or auto zone and have them run a test on your alternator and find out for sure

Battery loses energy, lights may be dim, not start. Look for indicator on dash to light up.
