carb.. the floats stickin.. get rid of the quadrajunk carb.. I highly suggest Edelbrock replacement components here..a 600cfm should do'er..(barkin throttle power) about 300-350 bucks well spent

Your Transmission might not be downshifting when coming to low speeds. Try driving at a lower speed with your transmission in either 1 or 2 gear. Good Luck.. I had the same problem on my 1982 Malibu, I replaced the transmission and the problem disspeared

sounds like mine.. Mine did this and it was the carburetor. it was bad... dad put a new one in and it was fine..This was a long time ago but this was a bad problem ... It also stalled if I was waiting for a light to change and I would push the gas.. it would back fire and stall as I went through the light.. sound firmilliar.

Your carburetor. You can get a rebuild kit, three cans of Gumout, two sixpacks of beer and have a good time overhauling it.
