Depends on you really. I have read that both Cedar and Pine are harmful to hamsters and others have said that cedar is but only some rodents have issues with pine. I personally use pine. I have used pine ever since I first got my hamster and he's used it since he got his and our mice. They all seem fine with it however if you really want to change to something else, I have read that Aspin is the best because it doesn't have the chemical smells that get released (forget the word and couldn't spell it to save my life anyway), but I can tell you that I've looked at it and you can get a huge bag of pine (like we do...5cufeet compressed for like $10 in Canada and only like 3L compressed of aspin for for like $4-5)...so if you have the money and want to try the other, by all means, go for it....But if you don't have a lot of money, or have more than 1-2 animals, then I'd suggest staying with pine.

Good Luck.

No, my hamster used to love his pine shavings. The only thing I found is that he used to try to eat them more than he would try to eat the cedar chips, so maybe it's a choking hazard or something. Just don't get the green shavings, whatever you do. They used to dye the bottoms of my hamster's feet and the inside of his cage when he accidentally spilled water on them.

Personally I think the cedar chips are easier to clean out than the pine, which tends to get sort of gloppy on the bottom of the cage, and I also thought cedar was better at masking the "aroma" of my furry little friend.

Pine shavings are not hamful, but cedar is. The cedar causes respiratory problems, especially with animals that have to live IN the bedding. It has to do with the odor (although it seems plesant enough, imagine having to have your nose stuck in it all day every day!) and what causes the odor that is the problem. Definitely use pine, or other hard wood bedding. If you can't find any then use newspaper, but please don't use cedar!

The best thing is a paper bedding, that you buy at the patstore. Never use newspaper, many of them use ink that is toxic to animals. You could also try aspen. This is similar to pine but a little safer. Never use ceder. Ceder is very harmful to them, it can cause them to have all kinds of problems. If you don't want to spend much go to a feed store(someplace that sells stuff for farm animals like horses) and buy pine shavings from them that are kiln-dried. If its Kiln-dried it is safer than reg. pine shavings.

Aspen shavings would be ideal, but pine is fine for a hamster. One other product you may want to investigate is a pelleted pine bedding. It is just as it sounds, it looks a bit like a rabbit pellet. The wet bedding clumps like cat litter, making it easy to scoop out. Also because of the texture, small animals like hamsters are less likely to eat it. The price per pound will be the same as shavings.

Cedar AND pine are BOTH unsafe! Go for aspen shavings or a paper bedding, such as Carefresh. I worked in a pet store for 4 years, and I have experience.

Find a pet store and look for some aspen shavings, they're supposed to be safer.

pine isn't as bad as cedar, but make sure it's "KILN DRIED" or else it is just as bad a cedar (HORRIBLE)
