The light usually comes on with about 5 litres left.
Next time you fill up, zero your trip meter.
The time after that, note the number of miles travelled between the fills, divide by the number of litres it takes to fill the tank, and multiply by 5 - that's approximately how many miles you can do.
But remember that the mileage of a car can be halved by a different form of driving, (stop-start traffic gives poor mileage in most cars, as does high speed - medium speed cruising is more economical) so be cautious.

I drive a Ford Fiesta. It has an onboard computer which tells you exactly how many miles you can travel with the available fuel. It comes on at exactly 50 miles left in the tank.

However there is a wide range of variabilty betwen make and model and age of vehicle.

It should say in the users manual how many gallons are left when the feul light comes on.

I know that mine comes on when there is a little over 2 gallons left, which is about 60 miles.

You could try carrying a spare can of fuel with you and letting it run out if you really need to be sure, but why on earth would you deliberately let it get so low?
