I would not say it is necessary, but for your personal safety, it is a good piece of advise. Lightning may strike as much as ten miles from a storm front, (NOAA) When it does strike, it can result in extreme damage to any electrical device, and if you happen to be near a particular piece of equipment, you may experience the equivalent amount of destruction. Think SAFETY!!!

Absolutely. Unplug everything as you can ruin all that mentioned -- a surge protector does nothing to prevent lightning strikes. And they can run down a power line for as long and far away as five miles or more.

I'm assuming that the guy who said "as long as your home is earthed" meant "as long as your home is grounded" which means absolutely jack.

It's best to unplug all that nonsense in a storm (especially, for the love of God, unplug your computer so you don't fry your hard drive and have to pay hundreds of dollars to get it fixed), stay off the cell phone and even stay out of the shower/bath.

NO. The phones and power systems are grounded against direct strikes; HOWEVER, the high "local" charges from nearby strikes COULD fry a system directly so it is a good idea!
