Since I have always had animals in my life, at college i felt like i needed a pet so i bought a fire belly newt. I didnt want to tell my parents about him yet but they found out last night and were really mad. They said its enough animals with our 2 dogs in the house and that I have to figure something out when its summer that i go home because I cant bring the newt home. I dont understand why since as a child they had always let me keep many pets.I knew that they were going to be really mad when they found out but never thought it would be this mad. I had tried to convince them to let me keep a small animal here but they always said no so i just went out and bought it. I really dont want to give him up at the end of the year since its my pet. I think it so dumb since its not going to be walking all over the house or anything, its just in its small tank and wont bother anyone. Can someone please help me ? I dont want to give him up, Any suggestions as what i can do ?

The first thing you need to do is find out WHY your parents really object to you bringing home the pet over the summer. They don't really seem to have given you a concrete reason according to your post. Once they tell you why they don't want the newt in their house then you can figure out what your options are. Also are they upset because you bought the newt with money that should have been spent for college or did you buy it with your own money? If you are in college that means you are 18 or older so what you do with your own money is your business. If your parents really and truly won't change their mind about letting you keep him over the summer I would consider asking a friend in your hometown if they could keep him for your so that you can go visit him while you are home during the summer. Another thing to think about is an outdoor cage/enclosure to put his tank in. Would your parents consider this? Good Luck.

You have several choices:

You're 18 and therefore your parents cannot dictate to you whether you get to keep pets. Tell them you won't come home for the summer, rent a room, get a job, keep your newt and be independent from them.

Get a friend to "foster" your newt for the summer

Take him home regardless, they're hardly going to throw it in the trash, or flush it down the loo, and they probably won't kick you out for it either. It's a newt, not pot, you could try pointing that out.

Being a college student, I think your parents are over reacting. It's not like you are a small child, and they will end up caring for it. I wouldn't suggest this to a school aged child, but if I were you, I would bring it home anyways and tell your parents you are of age now and not a child. You will be responsible for it all.

the school year doesn't end until May so you have time to convince them, take pictures of the little guy & add them to your emails, keep reminding them that a newt is no trouble but be subtle, don't over do it, they should come around to the idea that it's O.K.

I can give you a good few good newt recipes. The fire-bellied ones are spicy!

Ask a friend to care for it. I think your parents are being mean :(
