My daughter started on rice cereal and diluted applejuice at 4 months. She will be 5 months on the seventh. She loves her rice cereal and it helps herstay full longer at night, she is breastfeeding more and more though and I was wondering if introducing a little applesauce with her cereal would be ok for her. She doesn't show any signs of discomfort with the juice. Any advice would be great, Thank you.

Stage one baby foods are fine to start at this point. My little girl started at four months and has been very very healthy. She is not pverfeed and knows what she likes.
Apples, Sweet potatoes, Mixed fruits, green beans, squash, these are all her favs.
They say to wait till they are four months to start intorducing solids so that the little ones belly's are more developed and able to handle more solid foods. If she is already handling cereal fine it is ok to start introducing other foods.
Make sure you feed one food for a couple of days - at least three - so if there is an allergic reaction you can pin point what started it. Stay away from highly allergenic foods...peanut butter, eggs, ...a little early for that ... but its better to say it then to be sorry.
If your little one has an allergic reaction - hives, swelling, red blotches, abnormal bowels (though be aware that introducing solids will change their bowels - abnormal being more then 2 #2's in a day, more then the little red face screaming, type things) get her to her dr immediately.
Hope this helps!
And good luck!

well, uice isnt recommended until about 6 months old, and then usually not more than 2 oz a day. Rice cereal is fine, my daughter started on carrots and now has had all the 1st foods and most of the 2nd foods.shes 5 1/2 months but shes been on since 4 months.

she really shouldnt be having any juice until she is 6 months old. and about the applesauce, no you shouldnt introduce it, it is better to introduce vegetables first, or they will get to like the sweet fruit and not want to eat vegetables. if you want to start giving her something other than cereal, start with some veggies, then let her have fruit.

You could try it but watch for diarrhea, a sign she might still be too young. My daughter had the Banana yogurt at that age. Made by Gerber, in the baby food isle, and loved it. Some fruits have too much acid for their tummies. But she might do OK. It never hurts to try it, though I must warn you, most little babies don't like the apple sauce, you could try the pears. They are not as spice.

Try just the apple sauce alone and give it to her for a couple of days and if she does'nt break out. Than add it to the cereal. She sounds like a very healthy happy baby. Your doing a great Job keep up the good work. If you ever get to worried about her feeding than speek to her doc, He/she will help you better than anyone of us can. I always gave my daughter a little bit of one kind of food for like 2 days to a week and if she didn't break out I tried a new food of mixed the two foods I knew she could eat. Good Luck

The signs of being ready for solids are:

Sitting up unassisted
Teeth
no more tongue thrust reflex
interest in your food/mimic chewing, etc.

I wouldn't give solids until closer to 6 months because then there is a lower risk of allergies. I also wouldn't give solids just because I thought it might help her sleep better. The rice cereal before bed is a myth- it doesn't actually help them sleep any better, that's just coincidence.

My daughter started early on things like that. At about 4 months, she was eating things like applesauce, the sugar free kind, mashed potatoes, i actually gave her anything she wouldnt have to chew. She loved it, and it helped her grow.

she does not need anything but breastmilk or formula!
You are just putting her at risk for allergies......
their digestive system is not mature enough to handle solid foods OR juice at this young age....

breast milk and formula are 95% water based anyways......

WHAT ARE YOU DOING???????????

WHAT DOES YOUR DOCTOR SAY???????

Remember you have to feed this kid for the rest of your life…..so what’s the rush?

Here’s what to feed your child:
http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babyfeeding/1400680.html

Age: Birth to 4 months------------
Feeding behavior
• Rooting reflex helps your baby turn toward a nipple to find nourishment
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula ONLY •
Your baby's digestive tract is still developing, which is why solid food is off limits for now.

From 4-6 months------------
Signs of readiness for solid food
Your baby probably won't do all these things — they're just clues to watch for.
• Can hold head up
• Sits well in highchair
• Makes chewing motions
• Shows significant weight gain (birth weight has doubled)
• Shows interest in food
• Can close mouth around a spoon
• Can move food from front to back of mouth
• Can move tongue back and forth, but is losing tendency to push food out with tongue
• Seems hungry after 8 to 10 feedings of breast milk or 40 oz. of formula in a day
• Is teething
What to feed
• Breast milk or formula, PLUS
• Semi-liquid iron-fortified rice cereal, THEN
• Other grain cereals like oats or barley

And foods to avoid for your baby

----------------------------------

....."It isn't necessary to give your newborn water or juice. Most babies get enough fluids from breast milk or infant formula. Even when a mother's milk supply is just coming in during the first few days after delivery, the baby is getting colostrum, which is enough to keep the baby well hydrated. Because a newborn's kidneys are immature, she has a difficult time concentrating her urine, and if given too much plain water, may have trouble excreting it. This could lead to dangerous changes in the concentrations of sodium and potassium in her bloodstream. For these reasons, infants should not be given extra fluids unless their pediatrician recommends it. ............"

That should be fine. Just make sure it is babyfood applesauce, stage 1. This is more natural then adult applesauce, without all the sugar.
