I'm not sure if there is a field to go into with coaching. I would get a teaching degree in a subject you enjoy. Most high schools will only hire a coach if they can teach as well. While getting your degree I would either play football or assist in some way with the team to gain experience and enhance your resume.
Good Luck.

There is really no degree you must have to be a high school football coach. It's always good to have something in, say, sports management, psychology, exercise biology, but most of the time, a high school coach is just a local guy who has kids playing on the team. Anyone with a college degree would look for a different job b/c being the salary would only be a stipend unless you're coaching for one of the powerhouses like De LaSalle.

It is not required to have a college degree to be a football coach, however many schools require their coaches to to be able to teach to, so for that you would need any degree, and most importantly your teaching certificate. Right now in the state of texas we have a shortage of teachers so they hire you on a probationary eriod where you a number of years to get your teaching certificate.

I think it depends on what state you're in. In Texas you have to be a certified teacher which in most cases requires a degree (it doesn't really matter the type of degree) and a Teacher's Certification from the state. I went to high school in California and neither my varsity basketball or baseball coaches were teachers.

for high school, the coach has to work at the school, not necessarily as a teacher, my football coach was the head of our security, as far as coaching classes, probably, i coach little league and they encourage us to take them, so i would imagine that its highly recommended if not mandatory, but those are usually just a day's seminar or something. it all depends on the school or school's district

You probably need to be a teacher at that school with some past football playing experience.

It probably varies by state and/or school district.
I imagine anybody would require certification in CPR & first aid, though.
