Hello - yes this is perfectly fine as you can pick up/join/sign on to many tours when you get there. You can also 'do' them without a guide but you miss out on so much history its so much better with one!
If you are worried about the safety aspect I think the only real worry is pick pockets as they are rife!
Also you may find this handy - they have a cunning trick in Egypt - so when you get to the pyramids there will be loads of people selling their wares, not only will they cleverly split the group up if you don't want something some people sometimes throw the object at you, your reaction is to catch it - ha ha! Once you've got hold of it they may demand you pay for it. All I did to get round this was say no thank you clearly and firmly looking the merchant in the eyes and then place it on the floor so he could see where it was and just kept moving forwards!

I did exactly this about ten days ago. Yes it is very OK to do this but your driver may well want to be your guide and he may well have some people/guides at the pyramids who he will want to introduce you to. If you are happy to ignore all this then tell the driver to drop you off at the main car park ticket booth, ignore the first line of grabbing hawkers (they are quite convincing). You should pay £40 Egyptian (£4UK) for a general admission ticket. It is quite shambolic as there are guards all over the place and not that many signs. Once you have your entrance ticket just wander anywhere you like but ignore all the people charging you for further entrance and further guide fees except for one further charge (£10UK) if you want to climb inside the main pyramid. I didn't do this but there is a portacabin nearby that will take your money and then you present your ticket to the guard at the pyramid entrance which is about 10 yard up the side of the massive monument. You can do the same for the Sphinx. It is fun to wander around, there are hawkers everywhere and probably have been for at least 1,000 years. Enjoy it and don't loose your temper with them. Have fun.

Say Emshee to anyone who's trying to quide you on the door after you purchased the interance ticket.. Because someone will try to convince you.. Also you should know that they rip off forigner when riding camels and all these stuff by telling you to pay a lot of money.. While Egyptian and other peope who understand pay about 20 L.E per hour on a ride...

Yes its ok but remember that as u get out of the taxi u will be inundated with guys selling stuff. Say to them "Emshee" and that will get rid of most of them. U can hire a camel or horse to go up there. Its quite a long hike uphill to get there. Do go to the Cairo Musuem, i was amazed at it. It was totally awesome. Enjoy your trip.

I do not recommend, it is better that you pay some extra cash and be safe with a Tour and a guide. Keep in mind the current situation.
I have also heard about pick pocketing and continuous pestering on tourists. If you still wish to go by taxi and w/o a guide then you can do so but keep your eyes open.

The pyramids are good to see but very touristy, I went in a taxi and it was fine, I thought the best thing to see in Egypt was the Abu Simbel temple, if you get a chance.

sure it is, u dont need a tour guide there.
u tell the taxi driver u wanna go to (ahramat) it means the pyramids.
they will treat u very well there because they are used to recieve millions of tourists everyday.
the guide will only be useful for info about what u'll see there, thats all.
but remember always bargain, because u'll pay money to go inside the pyramids itself, ride horses, camels.. etc.
also bargain with the taxi driver.
have a nice trip
