Diamonds are made of carbon while rubies are alumino-oxides called corundum. Diamond has a hardness of 10 and ruby has a hardness of 9 (that is, diamond is about 10 times harder than ruby). Diamonds are isometric while rubies are hexogonal. Diamonds are a girl's best friend while rubies are a girl's good friend.

A ruby is a red coloured mineral called corundum, which is an aluminium oxide.
