I am a 37 year old woman who will need money for tuition and books for a graduate program at a private school. I think it will be about $35,000 to 40,000 for the entire program. The degree is in counseling. I really want to find some grants to help offset the costs. I am married and am a mother to one young child. any tips will help!

Grants for graduate education are few and far between. Some employers defray costs for their employees.

However, most graduate students are supported by the programs in which they are studying. In other words, most graduate programs award fellowships, teaching assistantships, or research assistantships to their top candidates. These awards usually carry full tuition remission as well as a small living stipend.

In order to achieve an assistantship or fellowship, it is necessary to be a strong candidate, and to apply widely. This means considering second-tier programs as well. Consider the offers extended, and then follow the money. No one should pay (much) for graduate study.

(Business school, law school and med school are the exceptions here. Most business, law, and medical students are NOT funded by their programs.)

It is harder to find financial assistance. I took out a loan myself. However some organizations pay for their employees to go to college. When I worked at Bank of America they paid for 80 percent of my tuition. They also pay for graduate studies, however you must stay with them an additional year once you complete graduate school or you have to pay back the funds. I work for the Department of Human Services and they also have tuition reimbursement programs. Home Depot also has employee tuition reimbursement. If you are employed it may help to ask if they have any tuition assistance programs. Hope this helps somewhat.
