That's a pretty broad question, but let me give it a shot.

First, the American Revolutionary War marked the first successful uprising against the British Empire. There had been other wars, other battles, momentary lapses in security, and all sorts of violence (it was an Empire after all!), but the Revolutionary War was different. The major difference between the American colonies and the other British colonies was that the American colonies had guns. In fact, there were lots of guns, and the American colonists knew how to use them very well. Of course you would have to in order to live in the American colonies, what with the Indians on the frontier! Of course whether or not violence with the Indians was necessary could be debated, but the fact of the matter is that the American colonists had guns and knew how to shoot quite well. The war against the British was well planned and well carried out. Imagine yourself as a Brit hearing news of the American colonies revolting. That's a big headline, right there. Imagine hearing that they'd won the war that followed. That's not big news, that's life changing news. The infallible empire has lost the American colonies? Pardon me?

Secondly, with the Declaration of Independence and the later Articles of Confederation, the American Revolution set a precedent for democratic government. It's interesting to note that France, who supported the Americans during their revolution, would have a similar revolution scant years later. In many ways the American Revolution put representative government back on the political radar. We take it for granted that half the world's countries are liberal democracies, but in the late 18th century most intellectuals laughed at the idea of representative government. So when the American Revolution happened, you can imagine their surprise!

I'm going to stop with those two points, although if I thought about it a bit more I might be able to expand on other ideas. I hope that this information helps you out.

Good luck!

The American revolution gave a major impact. The English were the greatest power the world had ever seen since the Roman Empire (which was much greater). And their armies were concidered invincible. And having farmers and militias beat the English sent a message to the world that the worlds greatest power at the time was beaten by farmers and militia men.

The greatest effects were on the way the world looked at itself. After the American Revolution, men began to think that the nobility didn't have the right to rule just because they were born to the right parents. With that, people began to think they had a group of basic rights just because they were people, not just because they were members of the nobility.
